db script to deactivate contacts?

Hello - I have 250 contacts I need to deactivate in CRM. I tried deactivating/activating a contact through the CRM UI and this test generated the following values in the database:

deactivated: statecode = 1, statuscode = 2 activated: statecode = 0, statuscode = 1

250 contacts is too many contacts to disable through the UI so a db update script would be much easier.  I know MS recommends not directly updating the database through db update scripts but I'm not sure of another easy way to make these updates.

So I was wondering, have you ever tried to deactivate several contacts at once through a CRM db update script?  If so, then did you simply set statecode=1, statuscode=2 for those contacts? Also, did your update process work as expected when you took this approach or did you experience any unexpected consequences?  I'm trying to assess the risk of this approach and determine if there is a gap/impact with this approach?
