SubGrid View Relationship Type

Hi all,

For a given sub-grid view for a N:N relationship, am I able to create a custom "type" field that represents the relationship type between two records.

For example, User1 is related to ResearchOpportunity1 and ResearchOpportunity2. In ResearchOpportunity1, User1's role is distinctly different than in ResearchOpportunity2. Each distinctly different role could be either an option set or free text.
