Searching within custom views problem - purpose of "Search for records"

Hi,

I have a custom view on Contacts. The query is showing all active Contacts with a related query on Program Contacts who are active and within a program "EC Partners" for example. The view displays 862 results and the name Bob Smith is not in the results. However, when I enter "Bob Smith" in the "Search for records" field, Bob appears 8 times. He is in the main active Contact List 8 times but, he isn't a Program Contact for EC Partners. I was expecting 0 results.

1. Isn't the Search Results field above a view supposed to search only in that views query?

2. Is the related query for Program Contacts being ignored and searching for only Active Contacts since that listed? I did remove this and tried searching the custom view when it only had the Related Program Contact query but, I got the same results...8 Bob Smiths.

What am I missing here?! I want to confirm that my understanding of the grid results search field is to only search within those results
