Accessing Contacts under Accounts in updated form

If I am viewing an account in the updated format and select to "Switch to Classic" then try to access any of the contacts in the navigation pane on the left hand side, I receive an error screen. 

If I am viewing the account in the updated format and select the contact from the left hand navigation pane first and then when the contact record comes up, switch to classic, everything works fine.

 

Does that make sense? Any suggestions on why this is happening?
