Auto numbering unique id to a record

In our system we provide a id to every Opportunity record. We are using the autonumber entity & a workflow associated with this to implement this. We are facing a major issue, like the workflow sometimes provide same id to different records created at the same time. Can u people help me with a code (plugin or workflow activity) to get rid off this issue ?? Thanks in advance.
