Navigation Bar Record Count

We'd like to be able to see if a contact record has data rows in a related entity from looking at the menu bar within the contact's record, versus having to navigate to the related entity itself to see if data exists.  For example, if a contact has four related addresses, we'd like to see Addresses (4) display in the menu, with the four being a count of the available records on that entity.

Does anyone know if this is possible and/or has tried it?
