Open lookup in a separate tab or window

CRM 2016 on premise v 8.0.1.97

Is it possible in a supported way to have a look up on a form open in a new window when clicked.  Currently if a user is in process of creating record A and they click to open related record B from a lookup, they are prompted to first save their changes on record A or else lose everything since the lookup opens in the same window 

Would like to maybe use the XRM.utility.OpenEntityForm but not sure what event I could use to call this.  On change event does not seem to be useful.
