How to implement additional closing options other than Won or Lost Staus in CRM 2011?

In our organization sometimes “qualified” prospects need to be cancelled by the client or abandoned by our organization, however in they need to be closed in the system as "Lost" then the status reason set as cancelled by the client and abandoned by us; and it is a shame that there are no easy solutions to this issue other than customization; we are a service industry not a retail industry and such situations do happen.  Users do not like closing as "Lost" their cancelled by the client or abandoned prospects. It is also not not appropriate – for historical reporting purposes and to better understand your hit rate reporting – that certain “qualified” prospects need to be closed as Lost when there are not.  We have instances where the client may have cancelled “qualified” opportunities and under that decision there may be “status reasons” to explain and better understand what is taking place at the client’s organizations that made them cancel the opportunity.  Similarly, organizations may have instances under which they may decide to abandon “qualified” opportunities.
