Only display related accounts up to a configurabl amount

I have a custom entity that is  linked to one, or a small number of accounts, whilst others  are linked to many thousands of accounts . For my custom entity with less than xx (configurable) linked accounts i only was to list account against my entity.. How could i do this ?
