Make form read only based on a field value

Hi,

We would like to make the form read only based on a field value.  This should disable the ribbon buttons and prevent the user from editing any related records.  We would like to implement something similar to the Resolve Case button.  Is it possible to do this without writing javascript to loop through all the fields (on multiple forms) to disable them?
